Three clients Michael Minitti, Distefano and Thekly Nomikos from Greensborough Community Campus took the opportunity to visit Living Legends – The International Home of Rest for Champion Horses, to enjoy champion race horses firsthand.
Living Legends is in Greenvale, Victoria. It is a picturesque sanctuary where champion horses can comfortably retire from their careers, surrounded by gorgeous grounds where they are free to run and play at their own leisure.
Living Legends is home to quite a few retired Melbourne Cup winners including:
- Rogan Josh (1999)
- Brew (2000)
- Efficient (2007)
- Prince of Penzance (2015).
The aim of Living Legends is to support aging horses and promote equine research and education, while also giving the general public the opportunity to visit these amazing creatures first hand.
It was a wonderful day and Michael, Sam and Thekly enjoyed exploring the homestead and watching these majestic animals frolicking in their assigned paddocks, and a big day of walking, as we all ventured into the surrounding parklands and stunning gardens.
An unexpected moment in the day was visiting the Horse Cemetery, which is located on the premises. Here we saw the graves of champion horses such as Doriemus (Melbourne Cup 1995), Better Loosen Up (Cox Plate 1990 and 1991 Australian Horse of the Year) and Regal Roller, who has his own namesake race (Regal Roller Stakes) at the Caulfield Cup given his nine wins there.
Everyone enjoyed a gorgeous picnic lunch, when we were able to watch planes landing at Melbourne Airport from the landing strip adjacent to the grounds.
It was an enjoyable and memorable day out for everyone, and a lovely way to welcome in the 2017 Melbourne Cup the following day.
“We had a good time visiting the retirement horse place. It is a place where horses go when they are too old to run. I enjoyed meeting and patting the horses and having a coffee at the café there,” said Michael Minitti.
